The Four Is Lava
What is Dave wearing today? Dave looks resplendent in (hold on, looking down) a ratty old green polo shirt, gym shorts, and socks with at least one hole in them. He is expecting his Met Gala invitation any day now.
How does Dave feel today? Dave's motivation tank is running on empty.
What are the factors affecting Dave's mood? Dave is dealing with a situation in which he is not explicitly being micromanaged, but must infer that he is and act accordingly. It is not dissimilar to the many times his brother made repeated poking motions toward him in the back seat of the carβbut never actually touched him. "Mom, make him stop poking me," Dave implored his mother. "Stop poking your brother," she ordered. "But I'm not poking him," he replied, feigning offense. The poking may not have been real, but Dave was compelled to deal with it as if it were. These incidents would lead to nights without dessert and, later, decades of therapy.
Is Dave implying Anna Wintour should take pity on poor Dave, because all the non-poking, and extend him an invitation to the next Met Gala? Dave is not implying that, but he expects you infer it.
